Incompatibilities

I like to think of myself as an adventurous eater but there are times when my Western bias shows loud and clear. I am a very large anti-fan of surprises in my food and the night that I bought potato chips in a can in Beijing and found out their flavor was blueberry was the lowest gustatory point in my life until tonight.

I am off my feed, as they say--not sick but feeling distinctly unenthusiastic about eating anything. After picking my way through some green curry and some pork slices with little success or fervor, I decided yogurt was what I needed and grabbed some quickly at our Tesco-Lotus Express.

When I opened it at home, the fragrance of corn unmistakably wafted from the container and I almost retched. Corn and yogurt are not foods that belong together in my opinion--but I decided that was Western bias on my part and forged ahead, miserably swallowing the kernels and trying to pretend they weren't there. As I finally got to the bottom of things, I saw a large, plump, red object that resembled part of a strawberry so I happily spooned it up--wrong! It turned out to be a big relative of a kidney bean, accompanied by a generous dose of tapioca. I may never eat again...

That's some itneresting eating. And I used to be surprised by the tuna/corn pizzas you can find almost anywhere in Japan. Corn and yogurt? Tuna and corn sandwiches too with lots of mayo. The strawberry sandwiches were pretty good though. Had Thai food for lunch today!

Yes Thais do use corn in ways a western eater may never consider.I have to agree corn in yoghurt is not the best use! I quess this, on the flipside may show the challenge Thai cooks in the US meet when trying to adapt Thai food to western taste. It is hard for most westerners to get past the smell of Gapi used in flavoring so many Thai dishes or the texture, smell and taste of small dried shrimps which are the true essence of (the now American classic) phad thai. Also on another path, your wonderful borrowed quote may be from Impasse,by Langston Hughes?

I remember the first time I ate pizza in London and discovered all sorts of unsavory toppings (including corn) ... and no pepperoni even offered! I feel your pain..

Yes, Langston Hughes--if you're in BKK let me know so you can collect your drink.
And that was corn in sweetened yogurt--almost as disgusting as the green curry I had in the US made with green peas instead makeua pong and milk instead of coconut milk--
Agree that the American aversion to gapi is a very sad shortcoming

Blueberry chips?
I fell prey to the corn yogurt too. What a surprise.
